Many of the higher ranking officers and government officials within the Confederacy as well as media considered Lee to be a pretty boy who wouldn't wanna get mud on his boots in a "real war" till the 7 Days campaign when he took over for Johnston. His first orders when he took over were to dig trenches. All soldiers hate digging trenches. The men were calling him "Granny Lee" & "the King of Spades". About two weeks later they loved him though. Would follow him to the gates of hell if Lee asked.

Define the boundaries and plow up a deep ditch to keep the boys in play. We called it the Alligator pit. Rule: everybody carries a working fire extiguisher or they don't play. If you ever get to the point of having paying spectators, fence the stans so flying debris don't get 'em. That shouldn't be too big a deal with the slow speeds, but lotsa lawsuit crazy fools nowadays.

4GooMan: Yeah I like Nimitz, another guy that don't get enough press now adays. "Who woulda tunkit", a flatlands boy from Kansas (I believe) would become such a fine Naval Officer. The man never even saw an ocean till he went to Annapolis ha ha. As a North Carolinian, I would like to see the USSNC, (one of Nimitz's favorite toys) recommissioned. Let me please man the gun on the UN ha ha! I would have to beg for that one as a North Carolinian. I'd turn the UN into a fine powder with those 16s ha!

Lee had much less of an obscure background than that. He had a command in the Mexican War 1848. Trouble was, by 1861 he was getting pretty old and not many figured there was any gas left in the tank. He showed 'em, though.

That's a right good bunch. Dadgum, Forrest and Sherman on the flanks and ol' Stonewall up the middle. But ya gotta have Gen. Patton in there someplace. Let him go first-he was so good at overextending himself, ya'd hate to waste him in reserve. I'd let Admiral Nimitz take care of the UN building. It's pretty close to water. And them Navy boys sure packed some almighty big guns.

4GooMan: that was Lincoln's deal not Grant's. Or at least someone in the civilian government. Much like Lee, Grant started out the war as some what of a "nobody" and made a name for himself at Ft. Donaldson on the Tenn./Ky. border early on. Lee was a fortification inspector/ developer in Virginia and along the coast, then was sent to W. Va. when it was already lost as an "advisor". He got blamed for loosing W. Va. by many as well. Lee was on "standby" when Johnston got wounded, rest is history.
