Here is a drum sander I designed and built from scratch.
I built some of the parts (e.g. the three rollers including the drum roller, the base table) and some other
are purchased from various places (bearings, nuts and bolts, screws, belt, DC motor and controller, AC motor).
It has a 2HP main motor and a DC motor with 150lb/ft torque. The maximum width of of a board it can sand is over 28.5".

  • Very nice piece of tool you made.

    Some details would be appreciated.

  • @vankoperenNL

I have posted two links above in the description of the video. If you click on those links you will see many photos of the build progress. I don't have plans or dimensions as I changed things along the way.

  • @sreza13

    got it, thanks.

Out of curiosity: is there a particular reason to move the conveyor up and down instead of the drum itself?

One would think that moving the drum is the simpler option.

  • @vankoperenNL

having mechanism to move a large/heavy drum that is rotating at high speed without vibration is very difficult. Also you have to think about how to move the motor/belt up/down too. If you look at all commercial ones this size they have the table moving.

  • There a lack of information to how you can build one of this sanders,he does not show any detail.

  • @zoconino

I have provided two links in the description of the video (see above and click "Show more" to see the links).

You'll see many photos I have taken during building this. I don't have any measurements or plan as I changed my design as I went.

  • Worlds biggest eraser!

  • That is awesome. A sign of a true craftsman is when he or she can build a tool.

    CHEERS!!!

  • I don't know what koolhandvuk is talking about, but from one wood worker to another, that's great. If he doesn't know why you would build one for the price you could buy one, then he just doesn't know what it's like to have the satisfaction of making something with your own hands. Good job and keep building.

  • I don't know what that guy's talking about. That's really cool.
