In this episode we finally see that Joe is actually getting around to putting in a raised bed where there was once only a nasty stand of shrubs. But as usual, nothing seems to come easy to Joe so far, and this episode reminds us of that. But as Joe says, "there are no real shortcuts to creating a great garden". But, there sure are a lot of ways to do it cheaper and this is where he excels. Check out the great composted soil Joe adds to his garden bed today. And the best part, it was all free!

  • I wish my city offered leaf compost. Makes me nuts when I see people plastic bagging and setting them out for landfill... It's just such wasted, wonderful stuff!

  • @halleysmommy It is such a waste. If people only knew how valuable those leaves were, most would not discard them. I've rescued many many bags of leaves from the curb and put them in my garden. I'm just glad my town makes tthem available for us to use for free. Very good program.

  • One garden tool I have that I could recommend (and I haven't broke it - not even close!) is a garden claw or garden weasel. I've had mine for 10 years now and while it doesn't dig deep, it is GREAT for breaking up the soil , and works even better when your beds are established. Worth every penny!

I am planning to go organic this season, we unfortunately don't have the community compost but I've been lucky enough to get hold of all the free manure and hay I can cart away.

  • I know this tool and it is strong! Very good for braking up soil along the surface. Thanks for taking the time to comment and share your suggestion.

  • Great job Joe! Just this year we embarked upon our raised bed garden journey. My husband has M.S., last year using a tiller almost did both of us in. The boxes are working great. I love the idea of your garden. Just to see what can be done with next to nothing. Really no excuses are there? Keep it up. Just found your series today, watching them all!

  • Thanks for the encouragement. Raised beds are the best! I'm glad you found the series and hope you enjoy them all.

  • I have a woodland close by my plot Leaf mould is beautiful for the plot

  • Yes! That is one mean, awesome Fiskars Digging Fork. Love it. And yes, I don't feel guilty about not "working out" on the weekend when I know I'll be spending the day in the garden. It is a great way to get a total workout!

  • good for you! is that a Fiskars gardening tool you are using? Great workout! who needs the gym!

  • Yeah, a lasagna garden would sure save the back! I'm anxious to show the progress but I need a little cooperation from Mother Nature. She still wants to "water the garden" and shade it from the sun. Things are moving pretty slow because of that.
