Afghanistans president, Hamid Karzai, has very limited power in the country and the most recent presidential election erodes his power further. Gen. McCrystal is esteemed highly in the area of special ops and his "unique skill set in counterinsurgency", and conversely, Gen. McKiernan was esteemed highly in conventional warfare with having a big footprint on the ground. What we now have is an unofficial admittance that the counterinsurgency is not working in Afghanistan as it sometimes worked in Iraq. Nor has adding the additional 30,000 US forces been effective which means neither model is sufficient for Afghanistan. Now an additional 40,000 troops are requested.
Prior to the stepped up US efforts in Afghanistan to confront Taliban forces in provinces well outside of the few urban areas of Afghanistan, other NATO forces were taking heavy losses. They even refused to enter certain areas known to be Taliban strongholds. The US had been placing much effort in bombing areas in Pakistan, angering the Pakistani government. Within months of becoming president, Obamas generals stepped up the ground presence in remote Taliban strongholds. However, US forces immediately started taking heavy casualties which brings us to where we are now.
nobody can win this war. It is nothing but a central plan to raise taxes on the US people and take innocent lives, there is no war that can be won they can only be ended in large portions of bloodshed and thats just not worth it
