it's technically a 2d game, since no matter what angle you are at, you see only the x and the y axis

You know, nothing in the real world is completely flat. Therefore 2d doesn't exist, it's all imaginary.

@orange451 are you are over thinking things....trust me, this is 2D, but using a technique or Mode 7, appears 3D

This is not Mode 7. Mode 7 is a very old technique which just allows for a background layer to be rotated and scaled. 2D only exists in things such as computers, else wise it has to be imagined, for nothing in the "real" world has only 2 dimensions.
