According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), every six seconds a child dies from hunger. Why? According to the latest reports out of Niger, 50% of the population (7.5 million people) is menaced with the inability to find or afford a basic staple such as rice. Why? The lack of satisfactory answers to these basic questions is what motivated us to create Malo Traders.
Hungry farmers should be an oxymoron but in much of the developing world it is a reality. It is hard enough for farmers to be poor. It is unacceptable for them to go hungry. Malo Traders is a highly-skilled, cross-cultural, and cutting-edge not-just-for-profit company specializing in the processing, storing, and marketing of rice for small-scale farmers. Our mission is to alleviate poverty, combat food insecurity, and eradicate malnutrition. We will create jobs, minimize post-harvest losses, significantly boost the income of farmers, drastically improve the nutritional quality of rice by fortifying it with micro-nutrients, and will ultimately mitigate the risks of violence fueled by food insecurity.
Good luck, Malo Traders! GSEC at the University of Washington Foster School of Business continues to support your business.
