CHAN:
An intense cold wave continued to grip northern India today. People are hard hit, especially at night. Here's more.
STORY:
In Allahabad city, the temperature plummeted to about two degrees Celsius.
[Srikanth, Sangam Resident]:
"It is intensely cold in Sangam. Yesterday all clothes became wet due to the excessive cold. We would have died yesterday night if there had been no bonfire. It was excessively cold yesterday night."
Meanwhile, in northern Himachal Pradesh, the mercury touched sub-zero temperatures, freezing lakes and water pipes.
Shimla recorded a temperature of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius. One man says the cold is unbearable.
[Jeetram Sharma, Shimla Resident]:
"It's extremely cold in Shimla this time. We haven't experienced such intense cold wave ever. Water pipes are frozen. We are not even able to set up shops due to the intense cold. We cannot do anything in such cold wave
conditions."
While winter temperatures in the plains of South Asia are mild compared to Europe, they can at times prove deadly in India. Thousands of homeless live in shacks without any heat.
The lack of nutritious food worsens the impact of the cold, lowering body heat and leading to hypothermia.
