My great-grandmother used to sing this to me when I was little - to help me sleep. I sing it today to my friends' children and will sing it to my child when she or he gets here in Feburary. It's a tradition that is nearly a millenium old. There aren't many who know these songs or their history, but I'm doing what I can to preserve my family's tradition - maybe that's why I became a folklorist.

  • It's a noble thing to try to preserve your folk history. But maybe it would put you to easy for you to know that barbry allen is a notated song, Francis Child collected folk songs such as these to help do what you are doing. =-) Barbry allen is actually the most well known one!

  • akm - Yes, Child collected literary versions of folk ballads, but without performance those literary transcriptions are really no more than folk poetry.

  • Wonderful .

  • This is beautifully done. I almost cried remembering this song. Thank you for your talent

  • This guy is quite good -- no music accompanies him yet he keeps the tune and sings the song straight out.............he is kind of cute, too. He does a very good job and sings it as it probably was originally. He carries a tune well.

  • I'm up in years now and Daddy sang that song all the time. Brought tears to my eyes when a friend online sent me an email mentioning it.... Had to hear it again....
