Zu Beginn ihrer Karriere legte CIA-Agentin Evelyn Salt einen Eid auf ihre Ehre und ihr Vaterland ab. Als Salt jedoch von einem Überläufer beschuldigt wird, eine russische Schläferin zu sein, muss sie fliehen. Um einer Verhaftung zu entgehen, das Leben ihres Mannes zu schützen und dabei ihren Kollegen von der CIA immer einen Schritt voraus zu sein, muss Salt sich voll und ganz auf ihre Fähigkeiten und ihre jahrelange Erfahrung als verdeckte Ermittlerin verlassen.
