In order to re-invent mathematics with set theory, it is necessary to prove that 1 + 1 = 2. By the way, Bertrand Russell didn't write 'Principia Mathematica' by himself; he co-wrote it with A.N. Whitehead.

  • @IoEstasCedonta Read Russell's 'introduction to mathematical philosophy' to learn how that is wrong. I would quote it but i've lost my copy.

  • @lllhOoLiGaNlll Naturally I have tried that, thank you.

  • @IoEstasCedonta Russell was a mathematician. Yes you can define natural numbers in terms of sets in a way that makes the statement 1+1=2 obvious, but Russell was going deeper than that and trying to define sets themselves in a logically consistent way. That's what I understand of it anyway. ZFC axioms were the culmination of this, Russell's work was an important forerunner. I think. He certainly wasn't a case of xkcd 675.

  • Halitosis? Who uses that word?

  • @ed6394epp Thank you very much! I will!
