Peter B. Kaufman (pbk@intelligenttv.com) is president and founder of Intelligent Television. He executive produces Intelligent Television's media productions and directs the company's research and strategic consulting work. He currently serves as co-chair of the JISC Film & Sound Think Tank; an expert consultant on access strategies for the Library of Congress Division of Motion Pictures, Broadcast, and Recorded Sound; and co-chair of the Copyright Committee of the Association of Moving Image Archivists. He also serves on the advisory boards of EUscreen; Opencast; and the World Policy Journal.
Previously, Kaufman served as director of the Open Education Video Project, supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation; associate director of the Columbia University Center for New Media Teaching and Learning; director of strategic initiatives for Innodata Isogen; and president and publisher of TV Books, a company he founded and sold to Lorne Michaels's television and film company Broadway Video.
Educated as a Sovietologist at Cornell and Columbia in the 1980s, he now writes and produces video about media, education, history, and society. He has written for Publishers Weekly, Scholarly Publishing, Slavic Review, Russian History, The New York Times, The Nation, First Monday, D-Lib, the Times Literary Supplement and International Book Publishing: An Encyclopedia. His recent work includes "Video for Wikipedia and the Open Web: A Guide to Best Practices for Cultural and Educational Institutions" for iCommons, the Open Video Alliance, and the Ford Foundation; "Funding Media, Strengthening Democracy: Grantmaking for the 21st Century," with Mary Albon, for Grantmakers in Film + Electronic Media; "On Building a New Market for Culture: Virtue and Necessity in a Screen-Based Economy" for the JISC Strategic Content Alliance; "Video Use in Higher Education" for New York University and the Copyright Clearance Center; and, with Jen Mohan, "The Economics of Independent Film and Video Distribution in the Digital Age" for the Tribeca Film Institute and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
