Update: As of January 5th, 2011, Wal-Mart reduced the price to $2.98 a bag.

Wal-Mart sold Dove Chocolate (dark) for $3.00 for an 11 ounce bag. Recently Wal-Mart started selling Dove's dark chocolate in a new 9.5 ounce bag for $3.48 per bag. The old bag cost 27 cents per ounce, while the new bag cost 37 cents per ounce.

Old bag: $3.00 / 11 oz / 27 cents per ounce
New bag $3.48 / 9.5 oz / 37 cents per ounce *

(* = price at Wal-Mart in Texas, October, 2010)

Dove Chocolate was the one who changed the design of the bag and reduced the amount of chocolate in the bag. How raised the price? Was it Wal-Mart? Was it MARS (who owns Dove Chocolate)? Was it a combination of both?

No matter as a result consumption will be reduced from four pieces to around one or two daily.

  • To save money my mother-in-law would saw a roll of paper towels in half. She figured she'd have twice as many paper towels for 1/2 the price. Come to think of it you could try that with Dove chocolate Tony. No wait... cut each of them in 6 pieces and then you're really stickin' it to the man! just sayin' ;-)

  • @7Dante7 - Your mother-in-law is correct. Excellent idea to cut the chocolate into six pieces.

  • Propo....I've finally come across some one as cheap.....no let's use the term astute shopper as I am. Yes I watched the sheet count on my double roll toilet paper drop from 332 sheets down to 298 and now to 286. I choose to not use the method you use to protest your Dove Chocolate atrocities but I'll find a way. We have to let them know we're watching.

PS.....I agree with the other guy....you've got more willpower on Chocolate than I have.

  • @wittumy - Good to see you back, hope you and your family had a good Thanksgiving.

  • Hiya Tony, try stefanelliscandies dt cm and look over their site for bulk dark chocolate :)

Their melt-aways are the BEST yumm

  • @lauran08 - Thank you. I just went to that site as you suggested. The bulk dark chocolate came to .43 cents an ounce. I am sure it is good, but I'm cheap.

  • Oh my god they changed the package!!!!

  • right decision. I dont know why but it seems that the mass of people dont get that kind of rip off

  • dove in the uk is called galaxy

  • Chocolate is made from cocoa beans, which are a commodity. And much like the price of a barrel of oil going up affects the price at the pump, so also does any rises in the price of cocoa beans. This is true for all products based on a commodity.

  • they are doing this stuff all the time. not only dove is doing that. and i dont like it ofc. i would just buy other chocolate and tell them on that way that i dont support their way doing this tricky price incresement. they dont care ofc. since most ppl dont notice it or dont even bother they can do it and so they will continue so

  • Tony,

Other companies have been doing this for years. Coffee companies did it 20-25 years ago. It isn't anything new, but I know it hurts when it's something we consume and love.

Thank goodness I don't consume coffee, chocolates, cigarettes, or alcohol. LOL

  • It may be Doves's Christmas special price -- Almost all the stores mark down their prices on Chocolate after Christmas

  • @CallMeTonyG Shit, maybe I should invest in cocoa futures.

  • I am not such a good shopper and I don't have the will power you have. When in the market place for a product I want or need here is how my thoughts go...is this the product (and I LOVE Dark Chocolate) I want(crave)? answer: yes...oh geeez they raised the price and simultaneously reduced the volume inside the package! That sucks...can I afford to spend an extra .48 cents for slightly less product to satisfy my craving? hmmm..I think I can...I buy the prduct and never give it another thought!

  • That's what happens when you shop at Wal-Mart.

    Joke store.
