The Miracle Center
Community Asset Mapping Program
Summer 2008 The Community Asset Mapping Program also known as C.A.M.P. soared above and beyond in their six week program for a major community project. Their goal: 25 students on a mission to discover the hidden treasures of the Belmont-Cragin community of Chicago. By researching and documenting all of its assets, they have found the resources useful to the youth, families and business owners. This was done to help enlighten the residents of Belmont-Cragin and to educate others outside of the area of the beneficial resources that this district offers in order to promote a safer, secure and more active environment. Their mission required a lot of interaction and strategic planning. They even began learning to record and edit film. With the help of their instructors, Whitney Harris and Vanessa Torres, they began to materialize their investigation. Through interviewing, reporting and documenting they compiled a Belmont-Cragin Directory. In addition, they created a Virtual Directory with film footage and snapshots of the communitys points of interest. The work did not end there, daily, the students worked hard to sharpen their presentation. Utilizing skills of professionalism and communication to enhance their representation of self, they learned exactly what their most useful gift to the community could be, their influence. To end their summer of learning and fun the students scripted, directed and filmed their own skit and music video depicting their community asset mapping mission. The Miracle Center family was pleased to present the incredible results that their work produced. They discovered a variety of hidden treasures!
