rbeenlio, back off on the baking, if you use to much it goes thermal, the less you use, the less heat you get.

did you experience overheating problem? mine overheats. i tried running about 3 mins and it actually melts the plastic cap where my ss connector is tapped. im afraid it would even melt the wire when prolonged. any suggestions to prevent heating will be highly appreciated. thanks

use citric acid with a pinch of salt instead of baking soda. Citric acid can be bought anywhere for canning tomatos or such. Wal-mart maybe. Remember, the fumes that come off of salt water/ electrolisis is poisonous. Remember to ventelate the area well and do not stick your nose up to it and breathe.

oh my ... if you have access to all them toys, I might have a list of tests I would like for you to conduct if you would be willing ... very few of us garage experimenters have that nice a collection of toys ... we are pretty much flying but seat of pants doing primitive old school test, observe, test again ...

I agree, I definitely need get to see what going on with the set-up. luckily Our departments Electronics lab has everything from multimeter's, ammeters, AC/DC power generators, to advanced frequency/signal generators and oscilloscopes.
Once I get my set up ready, I get in the lab and hook her all up, and see what we getting.

you are really going to have to get your hands on some modest test equipment. you need to know volts, amps and temperature at the very least. eventually, you will need a method of measuring the volume of gas output but that can wait. your PC power supply is not a bad way to go early on but eventually, you will need something a bit more reliable. the PC power supplies dont last long abused this way so have a couple laying around you can let the magic blue smoke out of.
You said that you were using about 1- 1.5 tsp of baking soda, but how much water were you putting it in. I just used 1/4 tsp in 900ml of tap water and it got pretty hot in about 8- 10 min.

Also it might help to know what kind of spacing we're talking about. I'm at about .040in. And i have about 188 sqin of surface area. How about you?

Last time I looked at it I was running my spacing at about .125"in apart. Any closer for me and I would have to re-design my plates a little so as not to touch. Haven't checked the sqin though; my best guess would be what ever a switch plate cover is minus the 1/2" square cut out on each one.

I had about the same amount of water in mine. I had used distilled water which doesn't have the impurities that tap water has. Those extra impurities that tap water has can lead to increased amperage and heat. If thats still getting to hot, we might consider adding neutral plates; I've heard that they help with that.
