Cutting Cardboard Ribs for Surfboard on CNC Router

Yawn - watch the tiny CNC router cut ribs from a cardboard sheet. Demonstrates my crude clamping system, piece numbering, and the current pace of producing ribs.

Hi I was just wonderring if you know what bit would be suitable for cutting cardboard on a cnc router as i don't have a laser?!

When you built your first one cardboard surfboard how long did it take you by hand to do it?

If you mean how long did it take to cut the parts by hand: I never intended to cut the parts by hand. Parts for the first board were cut on a borrowed laser. BUT we didn't set the power right. So one side was cut, and the other wasn't. I had to cut along the complete contours of each part with a razor. This took 6+ hours and made for injured hands. Without the laser pre-cut it would have taken maybe three times longer. And that first core had less than half as many parts as current designs.

What would you all suggest one use for Linux CAM software?

I've tried PyCAM under Windows - it's usable, and cross-platform.

@mesheldrake Hi again..sorry was being blind!! I 'm going to have a crack at building one of your genius cardboard surfboards ( i think the GSY as the glassing looks simplest!!). From your videos on your website it looks like your using single walled cardboard (only one corrugated centre rather than 2) is this right? I have found some 3mm single walled cardboard, is this thick enough (i know the slots for ribs are 6.655mm) any help with this would be most appreciated!!

We all are using EMC2 from linuxCNC.org to run the router.

The board modeling, design, slicing, notching, and toolpath generating software is all custom stuff written in Perl and Javascript.

We all use Blender sometimes to preview the complete assembly.
