A GENERAC automatic stand-by generator returns your home to full power within seconds, 24/7, even when you're not at home. More convenient than a portable unit, a fully automatic Generac standby generator senses an outage and begins to produce power immediately. There are no extension cords to plug in, gas tanks to fill, or switches to flip. A generator delivers the power you need, the security and peace of mind you want.

  • the first part is false. Just take the 240 feed from your portable and put in a transfer switch or just do like i do and connect the bare end straight to a 30 amp breaker in my shed and then you can feed your house. hurricane irene wiped out the power lines here and my generac 4000xl has been powering my two story for two days straight from my backyard with no problems. sure you can't use the oven but you can still use a burner and some lights, i have 4 refrigerator compressers, and two computer

  • The National Electrical Code and all utilities forbid using a generator with out a transfer switch. Of coruse you can wire without a transfer switch, but is it safe? There have been fatalities of utility workers miles away because of unsafe generator connections. Generac has a proven track record for safe and reliable opperations. Also these particular Gererac Generators are stand by and are NOT Portable. John Pacific NW Electric Portland OR

  • The answer is: very minimal. It has a 12V trickle charger. That is the only power that it uses while on standby.

  • @pdxsparky1 i know that you're not supposed to but as long as you test that your main breaker works it's doing the same thing as a transfer switch. Of course there are times when breakers don't work but anyone that would take my advice would have some type of practice in electrical. No joe shmoe is going to do what i described themselves for fear of electrical shock or fire. What i described is safe as long as your breaker works. you can test it by just killing the house power, easy as that.

  • As an electrician for Red's Electric I have wiried for a number of these generators. What surprised me the most is how quiet these units are. They also now have a plastic composite housing that does't look like a metal box in your yard, and doesn't start rusting once the paint weathers.

  • Does it take up power while on standby?
