We cultivate bodhicitta when we can open the heart and allow it to break over and over and continue to love beyond object or reason. Restricting and generating inner heat is basic tantric practice and great preliminary practice for mahamudra. Initially, seated meditation was not necessary, and only becomes natural and innate after bliss arises and the mind naturally blissfully abides. Restriction as taught by Patanjali is very effective.
The point of mahamudra is not about accumulating merit, it's about removing karma, good and bad. How we learned was that we restrict on what's happening at any time, during our daily schedule. We visualized the central channel, restricted all the gates, including breath, and it only took a few seconds. It brought us into the moment and was not disturbing in any way, and generated the inner heat that made bliss possible within a year of practice.
