Mount Cranmore in North Conway,NH was one of the original ski areas in the United States. One of the first ski lifts on the mountain was the famous Skimobile, built in the late 1930's. The Skimobile was a ski lift in winter and a tourist attraction in summer. Unfortunately, the lift was dismantled in the 1980's.

You can still see some of the Skimobile "cars" around North Conway, there is one in front of Delaney's Restaurant.

For more info about the Skimobile on the web: http://www.teachski.com/articles/cranmoreskimobile/cranmoreskimopbile.htm

Enjoy this trip back to the 60's with my Aunt Barbie doing the waving!

  • Thanks for the nostalgia. My great-grandparentslived on Cranmore Rd and sold their orchards on Lookout (Cranmore) Mountain to Harvey Gibson, the developer of Cranmore and the Skimobile. Prior to its development my mother and her cousins would climb Lookout Mtn. to "the ledges" for picnics and would shine a mirror down to "granma's" house below as a signal. I recall my many trips up and down the Skimobile whenever visiting the "North Conway relatives". Enjoyed my visit by way of your movie.

  • That's a nice story, I bet the area was beautiful when your great grandparents had the orchards on the mountain... I do remember how nice it was in the summer as a child to ride the Skimobile to the top, and lay out on the grass with the summer breezes blowing... what a peaceful time!

  • Great clip...what song is that?

  • Thank you so much for posting this - brought back great memories! :)

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I am 48, and in the '70's and early '80's we had a chalet in Madison, NH (Village District of Eidelweiss). I rode the Skimobile many a time during the summer and fall. I wanted to take my wife on it and was devastated to learn that it had been torn down. Our society seems bent on destroying anything beautiful and historical and replacing it with tacky, touristy junk. Such a loss but at least it'll live on in your video.

  • Oh ... the memories ... I've up & down Mt. Cranmore in the summer (round trip on the skimobile) and in the winter (up on the skimobile and down on skis).

  • WTF is wrong with people ! ! This thing needs to be resurrected. Someone needs to put this back into place. Not discarded like junk.

  • @HattieLovesCattie Yes,I see my typo a year later!!:) Roller,yup.

  • I skied for the very first time and learn to Ski at Cranmore back in the late 70's. The Ski mobile was awesome.

  • awesome!! thanks so much for posting!

by the time I started skiing as a kid, they were taking down the skimobile...but I still see the chairs all over north conway :)

  • Hi, I grew up skiing Mt. Cranmore, and spent many a summer with my family going up the skimobile. Like Wildcat, I was saddened to see this lift and history dissappear. I was wondering if you'd want to sell me a copy of this video for I never owned a video camera back then. dsalucco@aol.com is my email if you'd like to contact me about this. Thank you for posting this,

  • Roller ,not roaster.:)
