The southern coastal belt, especially the fishing village of Weligama is famous for its exquisite products of crochet
and tatting lace. Lace was introduced to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Blouses, table clothes, table mats etc are some of the popular lace products at Weligama and sold at a fraction of a selling price of such handmade lace available in European countries.
