This style is unique to groups in the coastal areas of Iraq. It includes some of the hallmarks of the more the widely known Khaliji style with its trademark hair tossing, and rhythmic clapping but differs widely in musicality and in that it can be seen danced in pairs while holding hands.
Performed by Amani and partner Linda (Nashville)for the Global Movement show November 9, 2008 in Nashville, TN

  • Iraqi dance is NOT khaleeji!!!!

  • @MasriKhaleejDancer - Well, that all depends on how you want to define "Khaliji"... the term, in the most inclusive sense, refers to the countries and the cutlures of the countries surrounding the Persian Gulf....

  • this is fine art ..........good beat and moves..........thanks for posting

  • This Iraqi style is new for me and I am growing into it. Thanks for your positive comments! I will be posting some of my Persian dance clips soon.

  • @MasriKhaleejDancer- Also, I have studied with the former Iraqi Minister of folk dance who now lives in Nashville. He was born in Lebanon, helped develop Caracella Dance school/company in Beirut. He spent 20 years researching and preserving the folk dances of Iraq INCLUDING "Khaliji" dance FROM IRAQ. He told me that the dance you see above is considered to be a "gypsy" style dance, distinct from other types of Khaliji. But that it is a type of Khaliji as it is from the gulf region of Iraq.

  • yes I would be posting really soon on my website & you tube. & yes is call Qawaliyah but not many people knows about this gypsy dance, so we call this Iraqi ance to make it easy.

  • WAW, I LIKE HAAY AL RAGLA,,,HAYHAYHAYHAY.

    TAHYATI

    AMMAR AL IRAQI

  • This is Chobi or "qawliyah" dance. Iraq has its a very distinct rhythm and movement it is NOT the same as "gulf style" states or the khaleej such as Kuwait, Saudi, Qatar, UAE and so on. Many mistake this b/c of the "hair toss"... You and your friend did a great interpretation. Its best not to call it Khaleeji please, this is Qawliyah!

  • @SDStar - Could you direct me to some of your videos or other resources to learn more about this dance?
