Governments have been suppressing people all throughout history. It is not the purpose of a government to be absolutely static, because that is detrimental to evolution. People are still family-herd focused, and always will be.

The government officials don't even realize they're doing it when they're doing it. They think they are being wholehearted, good-natured citizens. But everyone's a pragmatist, and so every once in a while they are willing to let a moral decision be put on the backburner for a profitable one, not realizing that enough people are doing it often enough that the overwhelming majority of decisions being made have nothing to do with morality anymore.

The enemy has been the government almost all along. That's almost an absolute inevitability. We can't circumvent the government trying to destroy its people no matter where we are, because when people gather in large groups to determine the fate of thousand-times-larger groups the myriad extreme opinions are outweighed by entirely moderate decisions - those moderate decisions being that of complete apathy toward morality.
