Ruby Bridges visits with the President and her portrait

Ruby Bridges visited the White House to see how a painting commemorating her personal and historic milestone looks hanging on the wall outside of the Oval Office. American Artist Norman Rockwell was criticized by some when this painting first appeared on the cover of Look magazine on January 14,1964; now the iconic portrait will be on display throughout the summer of 2011 in one of the most exalted locations in the country.

My friends son is in the Olympic games advert. And because of racism his mother is leaving Wales. I am going to miss her so much as she makes me smile and laugh and has been there through bad times. I wonder if we can stop her going by stopping racists. What an Olympic challenge that would be. One to be proud of! A true team effort as teamwork is the only way forward!

International Business Wales told me my work would never sell in the USA. And that is why the refused to invest. My fairy book is advertised on the USA Waterstones website for over £50+, no money going to us or Jodie who has Cystic Fibrosis. My little girl and I suffer with our asthma in a horrible black mould damp house because there is no justice. And I work in a run down school canteen with asbestos on the roof which has leaked three times. Adult sites trash my work on the Internet. Justice?

"I would rather be black than Jack" - this is why my friend is leaving Wales. The thing is the people that say this have no idea the pain people go through with black/dark skin. I never thought I would feel that my skin was dark like my Nan's. But I do not fit in here in Wales because I cannot say I am proud to be Welsh. I love my Welsh friends and the Welsh people I work with. But there is no support for my business here.
International Wales trashed my work then went to kiss me on the lips.

My Nan died feeling ugly because of the colour of her skin. Her grandmother blamed her Mother "Burmese girl" for her dark skin. All my other grandchildren are blonde and fair haired she said. Nan lost both her parents at the age of four she cried for her Mother. She was put in a children's home because Granny could not get the money out of the English Government for her dead sons Army Pension. Nan and her brothers eat and slept in a shed which was called a children's home.I am white & suffer

Are the hateful comments here really trying to make political fodder out of the experiences of a woman when she was six years old experiencing the ultimate form of human hatred?
If that's the case then please, allow me as a white, Christian conservative to announce that I am ashamed and sickened by those others who'd so heartlessly deride and diminish another person's experience with racial hatred.
This isn't the Republican party I signed up for.

@merrysmerrys She wasn't 'put' into harms way. She was IN harms way simply because she wanted to go to school. I think this is one of the most powerful of Rockwell's paintings and I think it should be on display. It sends a powerful message to ALL people. And when you see some of the sick comments on this board (not yours), we can see how this message is still, unfortunately, needed.
