Animator: Ellie Land.
A Northern Architecture project in partnership with Walker Regeneration Team and with funding from Bridging Newcastle Gateshead.
This animation is the result of a project which creates opportunities for Walker's residents to be involved in and influence the design of their public spaces. The "Sharing Spaces" project is a starting point for the discussion of ideas and a way of drawing other residents into the process. The recommendations that come from the residents are to be fed into the public art strategy for Walker and also used to inform the brief for the developer.
The group of residents worked with North East based animator Ellie Land, and urban designer Tim Crawshaw, to explore the design of the public realm through animation. The sessions encouraged group dialogue and posed the question, "how can new public spaces be used to their best potential in Walker?"
The group's experiences and memories of public spaces in Walker and Newcastle were documented, and the dialogue audio recorded and edited into short soundtracks for the animation. To illustrate their ideas and aspirations for the new public spaces, participants used a wide selection of materials, 2-D images and found objects, as well as their own drawings and models. The outcome is a light-hearted short film that offers a new perspective and raises questions about public space and its uses.
