The Song of Bernadette, 1943, director: Henry King, novel: Franz Werfel, with Jennifer Jones, music in this video: Arvo Pärt "Spiegel im Spiegel" (Mirror in the Mirror)
Beautiful, timeless film! Interesting that Linda Darnell played the Virgin Mary of the apparitions. She had such extraordinary beauty even for Hollywood.
The young man was portrayed by William Eythe, a Tyrone Power type. Power was serving in the armed forces and Eythe was a filler-in. But he didn't make it past the featured player stage.
The film scored 12 oscar nominations; four in the acting dept.
"Casablanca" was awarded the Best Picture oscar that year.
MsJones the mother of two and married to Robert Walker was signed by David Selznick to an exclusive contract. Selznick then loaned out the renamed Miss Jones ( whose former name was Phylis Isley) to 20th for the deeply respectful film "The Song of Bernadette" recounting the vision of the Virgin Mary to the peasant girl Bernadatte of Lourdes. Ms Jones won the Oscar for her fine performance, divorced Walker, married David Selznick, and became one of Hollywood's greatest stars of the 40's and 50's.
Does anyone know where the first part to this film is?
