Putting great dedicated intelligent teachers in classrooms alone will not make a bright productive student. yes , it'll help alot . Teachers how great, cant do everything. Parents too have to play a major role in their childrens education.
Parents or caregivers need to be home, supervise schoolwork,, love their kids n create a condusive enviroment for their children to grow mentally as well as emotionally. . Teachers arent subsitute parents.. dont blame teachers when the kids dont make it.

@Moe7133 I'm sorry. A great teacher CAN change a student who doesn't want to learn. I have done it. Now, I believe you are trying to say that "you can't win them all". This is true, although I do not focus on this. I have had a few students that I couldn't get through to. I never gave up on them. That is was Mr. Gates is saying a great teacher does. Every year I have a dozen or so students that "don't want to learn". If I delegated to responsibility to the parents, they would fail.

@thornysubject Also my parents aren't the best people to teach me how to deal with the world. Everything i learned about life and right or wrong was from my teachers. Most of then was pretty great. So much that I'm getting a scholarship on a great college and learned how to speak english without taking any courses. I'm know it's not perfect yet but I'm gonna make it. Bill Gates = My example of great man.

@thornysubject If the children spend half the wake time with teachers, sorry, but they are substitute parents. Myself just leaved high school and now I'm going to college here in Brazil. There was some teachers that changed all the class from evil to angels in a second. Looks like magic when everyone care about what a person has to say, we feel like great friends of the teacher. That was a magnificent differential, you have no idea. But people didn't see that because there was no record.

I would be very hesitant to use tests in the manner suggested by Bill Gates. There are many sources of error in testing and high quality tests are very expensive. Also testing puts pressure on students, which in some cases hurt performance rather than support it.

This man is brilliant.

My 10th grade math teacher gave a piece of candy to anyone who caught him making a mistake on the board. That one little thing changed the dynamic of the whole class.
