As an electrician... I can tell you that these transformers were most assuredly protected by very expensive fuses. A household fuse reacts in 1/60th of a second. Common Breakers used in modern day homes are not as safe as fuses. Specialty fuses are required in high rise buildings... especially back when these were built... and the chances that the sound is transformers blowing up is nearly comical. Just a note. 480 volts even seems like low voltage for this building as tall as it was.

?? What is this in reference too? Are you saying that the sounds heard were or were not transformers blowing or what?

I certainly have no conclusive evidence that transformers blowing up isn't the noise being heard. What I am saying is that fusing LIMITS the amount of arc flash. Arc flashes are extremely dangerous and explosive. I am not familiar with the electrical system of the towers... My observation of working in large buildings is that proper fusing limits arc flashes quickly and renders an explosive situation into a non explosive one. If this wasn't the case... I think we would see many high rise

Compared to Outdoor transformers, When a transformer is contained within a building... it is far more critical that it does not create a fire hazard. Comical was a poor choice of words.. but... I wouldn't suspect the noise being transformers. If it were... it would never bring down a building.. Could you imagine that! Someone made a comment regarding 480volts. Couldn't it have just as easily been 2200volts?
