In the spring of 2005 a student came to me with the idea to start a bike club at Santa Barbara High School and asked if I would be interested in being the advisor. After presenting this to ASB and creating bylaws for the club we became an official sanctioned Santa Barbara High School Club.Since the spring the club now has (20) members. We build, ride custom and show custom low rider bikes. But most importantly this club where all have a place of belonging. Some of the youth are former gang members, boys that were on the verge of being recruited into gangs or students in jeopardy of failing school. In order to participate, students need to maintain a (2.0) grade point average. We encourage social interaction with others in the community and school, who these students normally would not interact with. As a group, we also participate in community service showing how important it is to give back to a community that has so much to offer. Please support us to honor these students and their outstanding achievements. Through this short film documentary which will open the eyes of many, possibly break stereotypes and most importantly it will open a world of opportunities of every student that participates in this film. This project can be that one chance that these students have to show their Community and the World who they really and what they are capable of accomplishing. It contributing to our Community as positive role models for others.
Premieres are Sunday Jan. 27-1pm Marjorie Luke Theatre & Tuesday Jan. 29-9:30pm Center Stage Theatre

  • i left this club....idk about now but at first it was all lie's.....nice bikes....

  • unfortunately the district and government thinks that programs like this one, are well, left out of the equation... now a days music, arts and clubs like this one, are being ignored. It is for the community to step in, and help our struggling youth of the future.

  • i'm in this club started last week its been awsome

if u have any questions jus hit me up

  • I know what's up, i was involved with the video... i hope you enjoy your high school years!

  • Very Nice Video..showing that a car/bike lowrider club does not have to be a "gang" thing but more of a Chicano thing...part of our history that goes back to the "pachuco riots" in L.A.

Kids need to know you can have your cake (bike club) and eat it (not join a gang to be in one)

if from Oxnard and we would never dream of starting a club like this in school because of the ignorance of the distric with the 0 tolerance on gangs.

congrats on the club and good luck!

  • I'm hoping that our documentary can go places & show it at schools around the state/out of state, It has a great message, so many people have this assumption that low riders are apart of a gang, really it's apart of Chicano Tradition. There a lot of kids who are building bikes/restoring cars for the good.

I hope this Doc will change minds of the ignorant. Hopefully creating more clubs. Can you email me your information and school info.. so maybe coming and doing a presentation at your school?!
