I see where you're coming from. I was always told not to step on graves, and that it was a respect thing, though there may be a superstitious element with some people
I'm neither superstitious nor religious but still say a few words to my Mother at her grave - As do lots of other non-religious friends at the graves of their loved ones..
I still don't know why I (or others) do it, but I feel I have to, as well as want to
