Not all European Parliament candidates are created equal. Here are some of the most out of the ordinary. 
 
Elena Basescu is running as an independent in Romania, a socialite, well-known for her looks. Her  dad is Romania's president.




Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, grandson of Italy's last King, is also campaigning for one of his country's seat in the European Parliament. The prince is a Christian Democrat.
 
Portuguese Nobel literature laureate Jose Saramago calls himself a 'hormonal communist'.  At age 86 he is running symbolically.
 
Gabriele Pauli is heading the Free Voters' list in Bavaria, in southern Germany.  She added to her stature a couple of years ago proposing that marriages should automatically expire after seven years -- renewable.
 
And: black flag ahoy! Sweden has its Pirate Party. 
After a recent Internet file-sharing conviction, with its drive to reform of copyright practices, many forecasters say the Pirates stand a real chance of hoisting the jolly roger in the European Parliament.
 
In the Netherlands, where it has two members in the national parliament, the Party for the Animals says it wants to give a European voice to the victims of human exploitation.
