Correction - Front brakes are not applied when the rear brake is used. However when the front brake is applied, then the rear is also applied. You can just use the rear brake to slide down a steep hill. From the user's manual
4 - 16 "The unified brake system does not function when the brake pedal is applied alone or before the brake lever is applied. "
