I dunno, in this case I actually felt for Gendo. His son would have died if he hadn't intervened. It was horrifying for Shinji, but at least he wasn't killed. Parents often do sick and evil things for their children.

@solidgear91 Evas are made by humans based on adam (the shadowy figure in the first impact) however they do not have S2 engine like the angel does. Seeles were able to mass produce evas with s2 engine you will see this in the end of evangelion Asuka vs mass-produced evas thats why they were able to keep fighting eventhough Asuka had already damaged them badly. Unite 1 is the first eva to acquire S2 engine by consuming Zeruel, the fourteenth angel. so there you have it

@tarjay35 To long to explain in a youtube comment. Watch the series, and when you are done read some articles or summaries. That usually helps me out when I'm confused about something.

Hm, i was planning on watching the series anyway and i read some of the wiki article but i didn't want to read too much because i heard it was real mind-rapish so i wanted to interpret it for myself so i didn't read too much in case it had like spoilers. thanks!

@tarjay35 Yup, wiki articles usually contain a bunch of spoilers, and trust me the evangelion page has a lot. So if you don't want to spoil the series, watch it first and then read the articles. It's fun to see if your interpretations matches with others :)
