When you add a port to an enclosure, it tunes it to a certain frequency depending on what the dimensions of the port are. The frequency you choose depends on what kind of music you listen to. I listen to rap, and I love very low frequencies so I chose 30hz, plus these subwoofers are made to play low frequencies down to 26hz.
Look up "how to build a ported enclosure", it will help you with the specifics on tuning an enclosure.
