Tony Hart tried to teach me and everyone else my age to draw through this programme throughout the 80s and 90s. In my case it never worked, but the effort was appreciated nonetheless.

I've also thrown in some CBBC linking with Andi Peters at the end.

  • Thanks for posting this. I have not seen this for years! I actually made the animation included in this programme at about at 4:50 in the above clip. This brings back so many memories. HART BEAT was a great show to work on. :-)

  • @ExplainingTheFuture You're welcome, I'm glad to bring memories back - I hadn't ever thought I'd get anyone who actually worked on the programme commenting here :)

The little linking animations were always nice - what was that character on the left meant to be, a sort of... pink elephant genie-thing in a top hat?

  • I cried when I watched this, my children and I used to watch and video every episode, we are going to dig them out from the loft and watch them. How sad that such a talented man has passed away RIP Tony x

  • Thanks so much for posting! Can't believe they junked the originals! So.. thank you for even more so : )

  • I don't remember the linking animations at all.

  • When we were kids we had Tony Hart explaining interesting things to us in an understated, dignified manner and encouraging us to try creative things at home.

Now it's Dick and Dom in da bungalow....

  • The pink character was called "Fisherman Fred" as he first appeared sitting fishing on a toadstool in the 1988 series. I've no idea what he was! But I sort of got stuck with him. The other character in the animation here -- "Kate" -- was far more flexible (even if she skates through a box above!). Fred was totally 2D but kept being reused (I think 10 times in total) because everybody liked him! :) The animation for Hart Beat was always a rush, if a rewarding one.

  • watch right till the end of the clip peeps - you get to see blue peter, andy peters and Awald (sp?). yey! Thanks so much for posting this. It makes me happy and sad at the same time. CC

  • Wonderful stuff, of course.

But has anyone else noticed that someone was still, even at this point, standing up for Five Star?
