Als die Wehrmacht am 27. April 1941 Athen und die Akropolis besetzte, forderten die deutschen Soldaten den Evzonen Konstantinos Koukidis auf, die griechische Flagge einzuholen und die Hakenkreuzfahne zu hissen. Der junge Soldat holte die griechische Flagge ein, umhüllte sich damit und sprang von der Klippe am Ostrand der Akropolis in den Freitod.
