This is the scene from Mulan in which the title character makes the decision to take her father's place in battle. This is one of the alternate music cues composed by Jerry Goldsmith for the scene, quite different from the version used in the final film. This track is available on the official soundtrack album (track title is "Mulan's Decision").

I've tried to retain or recreate as many of the sound effects as possible, but there are a few missing. Hopefully, it should still approximate how the scene might have played with the alternate cue.

This is just for fun; no copyright infringement intended. I do highly recommend this movie, though. Music is by Jerry Goldsmith; film clips are owned by Disney.

  • Incomparable to the final cut. Nice as a standalone piece, but it doesn't quite pair up with the visuals as well, nor does it really carry the grit, you know, the determiantion in the synthesiser version :D

  • I think I heard of this. Suppose to be the non-electronic version

  • It's nice but for me it just doesn't suit the mood as well... the synth version just carried more power with it, and at the time it blew me away (actually the song still does, it's my favourite on the track)

  • I Like this one better

  • this version sounds uplifting and determined.. maybe I'm too used to the final version (and much more biased) but it feels somewhat jarring. it's a somber scene and all of a sudden you have this heroic-like music? (I would probably jump a bit in the movie theater.)

I understand what NYhippie543 is saying.

  • Thank you for this. :) It's really interesting. It's amazing how much less dramatic this track is. I'm really glad they changed it.

  • This version plays it a bit differently than the synth version. The synth version makes the scene more tragic, like it's something she needs to do and it is her duty to her father to go to war in his stead, whereas this version makes it more about being a hero and having the brilliant idea to go to war in drag. I don't know if anyone will understand what i'm trying to convey here.
