Now this game wasn't too great for the genesis but the sound was really good when compared to the TG-16 version. Although this game was ridiculously watered down it is a OK game and does not suffer from that weird view angle the TG-16 version is plagued with on the plus side they did a good job on the SE side where the explosions and missiles don't sound like they are SE coming out of my mouth....lol
But this game to was a failure (even though i played it to death as a kid and its fun as hell) if you see the Genesis 32X version you will understand why.

  • You wanna talk about failure? Sega Cd version is a true failure!

  • @123doomdoom Thats so true... ABIII Sucked but the music was nice...:)

  • I'm not sure how you can call a game like Afterburner even running on a Genesis or TG-16 (and for that matter the 8-bit systems) a failure. The hardware cannot compare to the arcade cabinet, so what had to be done is recreate the gameplay by other means, which, IMO, they did.

On the other hand, the 32X can be considered a failure for not doing much more impressive things than the ports of Afterburner and Space Harrier.

    Great vid, anyhow, thanks.

  • I agree with you on that. The 32x itself was a failure. Simply because of its potential that was never used. I always though that should have been its own system. But then again Sega would have dropped the ball no matter what they did with that add on unit. I do however like this version of AFB2 alot I just was comparing it to the 32x version.

  • This version was really nice except the autofiring cannon. I always hated that.

  • @123doomdoom I didn't even mean to post that...

  • @123doomdoom you can disregard that last message.

  • @kirgeez aiming is easier in the PCE version than any other version. I don't know your reasons for calling it terrible.

  • @kirgeez For whatever it's worth. the Sega Genesis version is a good conversion, and it plays decent, and the graphics are good. However, I would have loved to see more variation in the landscapes (Like the PCE version), rather than have bushes and rocks repeat throughout the game.

  • I actually like that the 32X versions of Afterburner and Space Harrier were arcade perfect. I mean, that was the first time they could be replicated at home. I was plenty satisfied with that over additional bells and whistles. God knows the 32X couldn't handle polys so well, so the only thing they could have done was throw in Donkey Kong country style "rendered" graphics or something as was the style at the time. I don't even want to think about how awful that would have looked.

  • @kirgeez I have to disagree. It still had to run off the Genesis's hardware, so while the accessory itself was powerful, the Genesis couldn't harness it. It's like putting a tunnel-ram race intake manifold on a Toyota Corolla, the piece itself has potential, but, well...

  • You'd have thought after a while enemy pilots would have come with with a better combat strategy than flying straight towards you.

    Don't care though.

  • @ADa89mixus

that's why it's one of those good conversions.out run was equally awesome but i never enjoyed outrun that much.
