Blade Runner successfully adapted a cyberpunk graphic novel about godlike children devastating Tokyo by dubbing characters over animation cells? This is news to me.

I feel saying this movie is great because of its animation is like saying Avatar was great because of its CGI. Avatar was horrible but because it was nice to look at it received acclaim. I will say that Akira was far more enjoyable than Avatar could ever be and to compared them is pretty unfair, but Akira just left me unfulfilled and did not live up to the high amount of hype and praise (story wise). I'll have to watch again I guess. But having not read the manga this felt unfinished as a movie.

Keep googling but can't find any information. He says Akira single handedly saved the japanese film industry in 1988. I'm just wondering how?

Hey kid, Akira isn't the only fucking cartoon to use layered backgrounds, hardly making it a reason for being the "pinnacle" of animation.

True that. I hope the background artist didn't mind too much!

Yeah kinda. Does it really matter? Pretty much every great filmmaker with studio backing goes over budget if their ambition and standards are high enough. If it ends up making the film better, the only people who need to worry about that are the studio execs.

I appreciate how incredible this attention to detail is, but doesn't this sequence show poor cost effectiveness?
