I just tried this track out earlier, and found that the alternate routes needed work. Apparently, the ground that was painted on the alternate paths was one that slows the kart down. (Dark dirt and dark mottled grass can do that.) Without sufficient boost, those paths are more like "longcuts" than "shortcuts", so they don't seem to be worth taking.
