Over about the last 5 years a huge structure has been built a little to the North of Mumbai (Bombay) in India. It is a Pagoda with the world's largest stone dome, almost 100 metres across and reaches almost 100 meters into the air. Associated with the pagoda are the writings of the Buddha in all the main languages of the world and in the languages of the Buddhist countries.

The Buddha had no interest in starting a religion. His teaching was the pure science of the cause and relief from suffering. The method that he taught has at its core the practice of Vipassana Meditation. The pagoda can hold 8,000 vipassana meditators at a time. Around the pagoda visitors can see pictures of the Buddha and the story of his life and teaching.

  • this is lookin a lot like shwdegon in Myanmar(Burma), Yangon!

  • Yes, it is modeled on Schwedagon. The global pagoda is now completed and was officially opened by the President of India in February 2009.

  • is this bigger than the original one? da world's largest??

  • It is a tiny bit smaller than Schwedagon (out of respect). However this is a dome with space inside which is quite different. This is by far the largest unsupported stone dome ever built.

  • It's wonderful... sill I'm feeling weird seeing this project evolve. I was very surprised first hearing about this project. It's built to have good groupsits with a huge amount of people in, and also to draw the interest of people not having contact with Vipassana before.

But I wonder if this kind of 'showing off' suits the pure dhamma technique... Now it's there, better enjoy it.

  • Surely Goenkaji's intention is for people to be able to get good information about the Buddha's real teaching for thousands of years to come.
