@tubeplunger I bet they were high. The song is from the 1700s and is a satire of something written in the 1500s!, Tolkien got hold of it in the 1940s and wrote his idea of what it might "originally" have been. I used to laugh my ass off reading his version, which does have people getting high in it. Well, drunk, anyway! Including the cat! Hic!
