Growing up on the Southside of Youngstown Kelly began boxing in 1991 at the age of 9. After graduating from high school in 2000, at the age of 18, he became a professional boxer.
Although his professional debut was on ESPN Kelly's career did not register on the radar of sports media and news. He amassed a record of 29-0 with 26 knock outs by the time he landed on an internationally televised HBO broadcast in January 2007.
In 2007 Kelly defeated top ranked Jose Luis Zertuche, Edison Miranda, and the World Champion Jermain Taylor. None of these opponents had been knocked out. All of them got knocked out by Kelly.

In 2008 Pavlik fought 3 times. Once in a successful defense of his title at middleweight, once at super-middleweight and once at lightheavyweight.
In 2009 Kelly defended his Title twice. In February he KO'ed #1 WBC contender Marco Antonio Rubio and in December he KO'ed #3 WBC contender Miguel Espino.
In 2010, In his 3rd year as World Middleweight King, Kelly lost the Title to Sergio Martinez via 12 round decision. Future plans, including a re-match or moving up to a more natural weight for his size, are being considered.
