LA JOYA- News Center 23 had a chance to ride along with La Joya police Wednesday and while our crew were on the streets, police arrested seven undocumented immigrants. A call came in saying our police officer Pete Gomez was needed to assist a fellow officer off Jarachinas Road. A pickup truck was pulled over and, as we got closer, seven Mexican nationals were in the back of the pickup truck, hiding.

"We got wet pants here, just to let you know they just finished crossing the river. it could be maybe 30 to 40 minutes ago maybe, because the pants are nice and wet and soaked," said Gomez.

Police Chief Jose Del Angel arrived on scene just moments later. You see, during the chase, as the police officer pulled over the pick up truck, the suspected smuggler driver opened his door and jumped out to run away, and he did. Chief Del Angel will now drive around the area to look for him. The immigrants were asked their names and asked if they had documentation to be legally in the U.S., no they said..

"All these male individuals are from Michoacán Mexico and they said they just crossed about 30 to 40 minutes ago. the Rio Grande river," said Gomez.

The seven are to be handed over to border patrol for further processing and as we waited under the hot valley sun for border agents to arrive, one immigrant told us they came seeking jobs.

"Pues venimos a trajabar si..pues ya ni modo," one illegal said. We came to work he said and it's oh well now.

Two border agents came and the seven were split up into two vehicles. Their journey to America ended Wednesday and for La Joya police it's just another day on the job

"Practically see this every other day, you know, the river is really close," Gomez added.
