love all this trumpet talk! doc came from the best of several worlds, superb training and classical technique, great lead and studio musician and his style was more Harry James and Rafael Mendez (the latter also made some swing style big band recordings for pan american) but his vibrato sounded just a bit dated compared to such modern studio leaders like Bobby Shew

@jazzfi Interesting point with the Vibrato. Except bobby shew can't play very well any more. Doc just keeps getting better.

I want that horn. What kind of trumpet is it? Is it in the Smithsonian? If not, and it comes up on eBay, I will bid on it. ;-)

I had the great privilege of meeting Doc in the late 70's. In spite of his celebrity, he was very modest and personable. He would come to put on two shows a year with the Baytown Robert E. Lee H.S. Band headed by Mr. Charles Forque. What a time it was for us young musicians. Doc was the greatest all around trumpet player of his time, much like Wynton Marsalis is today. When Doc played, we knew we were in the presence of a master. Thanks, Doc, for inspiring all of us.

Michael Kubelka: Thanks for your short and very sweet story about meeting The Doctor. It made me feel good about being a trumpet player. Thanks again.
