I read that he practiced all the time. He even got fired from a job because they caught him playing uke in the bathroom when he was supposed to be working. He sometimes would even practice after he was in bed.

What a talent, but he resembles Bela Lugosi just a tad. I expect him to say, "I've got my ukulele, but I'm going to village to get some blood for bleakfast, blah, blah". He was a true wizard of the strings. RIP Mr. Roy.

One day in the late 1970s, I was walking at Washington Square when I saw a great musician playing a dobro. I listened for a while, and wanted to ask if he did Guitar Rag, but I stayed at a distance since I had little money in my pocket. Not long after that Yazoo records released a compilation of early recordings by Roy Smeck. As the picture on the album was of him as a young man, it took a few years until I realized that I had heard Roy Smeck. He had recorded a great version of Guitar Rag.
