a wood mock up test for a concept for a human power helicopter for an ongoing contest. Note: Before you post a comment..THIS is an old wooden test, it is not the final rendition. I am currently working on a sleek aluminum model that is also tip propeller powered to avoid torquing problems.

  • Dude your going to need some sort of light weight gear system, That way you wouldnt use all your energy just getting the blade up to speed. what if you used like a oneway clutch out of a bike tire then you might be able to get 2 or 3 gears to help you. I like the idea of the weights to keep inerta though. What if you put 4 or 6 blade on it as well, that might help with extra lift. Or maybe like you spin an air pump then have the blade hooked to some sort of air motor, like an impact wrench?

  • Actually my redesign uses a one way clutch and a set of three gears, so you're right on with your suggestions:) I had thought of using an air pump but the amount of energy needed to get enough cubic feet per minute thrust was not very efficient.

  • @efrainpalermo Yes i supose thats right, it would take alot of energy. If you dont mind me asking, what contest is this? I love the idea of human powered flight devices. Even though they have hardly any range the process of designing one sounds fun. Is this contest for only helicopters, or are there planes to? I personley love to fly. How do you plan on stable flight, do you have a tail rotor? Thanks for posting this vid, it has my brain wirling. I would love to try somthing like this.

  • This is the Sikorsky Human POwered Helicopter Contest. This one is just for helicopters but there are other human powered contests out there. Im going to use tip propellers to get away from using a tail rotor. The contest only calls for one minute of flight, about all one could do anyways, so not something for sustained flight :)

  • what if you get tired in the air..how do you steer?...

  • The contest only calls for going straight up and then down so makes it less complicated!

  • While adding weight to the prop tips gives more momentum, it also adds to the overall weight that you must lift.

  • Good luck getting that thing to fly. You're gonna need it.

  • good flying :-)

  • would suck to get a cramp mid flight

  • This is stupid. Even if anyone made a really lightweight human-powered helicopter, they could only fly for what... thirty seconds? I wouldn't waste my time on that... Maybe an airplane...

  • this is the lost video from dharma initiative, IT ALL BEGUN HERE XDDDDD

  • tu ses un cojon

  • You have to be The Flash to get your self off the ground!!! What will happen if you get to tire to pedal? With all that pedaling there can't be any balance! Explain!

  • Use a battery as a starter and then once spinning pedal and when ur up in the sky the battery charges.

  • yea need to spin it about 200 times faster and you might get somewhere.
