Update: Disable Mouse Integration to fix laggy mouse.

Portal running in a Windows XP guest. This video is using DirectX7 mode; it will run DX8/DX9 but is practically unplayable. Problems with stability and a laggy mouse exist.

- VirtualBox 4.1.8r75467
- Host: Windows 7 64Bit
- Guest: Windows XP SP2

Host PC - i7 2600k, 16GB ram, RADEON 6970
Guest PC - 2 Cores, 128Mb Video mem, 3D Accel Enabled

NB: wineD3D is installed in this video; I need to remove it and run it again.

See http://bit.ly/woesIP for a version without wineD3D installed running in dx9 mode.

  • I have done that, but either Portal will close itself before the main menu or Portal will just crash after GLaDOS counts down. Did you have to configure WinD3D like in Linux? The closest I have to actually running Portal properly, is either with SwiftShader (5 FPS at best) and 3D Analyze in wireframe (otherwise I get a white screen).

  • No special configuration was used for wined3d; the launch options used in the video are "-novid -dxleve 70 -console -width 1280 -height 1024" if it helps.

  • pass "-dxlevel 70" as a launch option for portal.

  • How did you get Portal to run in DX 7 mode without crashing when the first Portal opens?

  • There is still instability with random crashes using wined3d; I did not notice a fixed point of crashing at all with the first portal while testing. Forcing the screen resolution by the command line fixed a majority of the instability for me.

  • Thanks, I will try again.

  • When I try to run Portal on my laptop, which hass a DX7 class GPU, Portal always crashes when GlaDOS counts down and the Portal opens. I tried WineD3D and it still crashed. Is there a special way to force DX7, because usually Portal will not even start becuase it detects that my GPU is not Pixel Shader 1.1 Compliant.
