Why does everyone like to literalize the Oedipal drama? The "mother" and the "father" are functions that are simultaneously at work in the psyche and whose goals are opposed. The "maternal function" demands instant gratification and pursues pleasure, and the "paternal function" establishes a limit or boundary to that immediate satisfaction and pursues reality (or law).
