Only with the help of deputies Decker and his men can pass the land of Jack Duane, called "Shorty", with their herd of cows and steers.
Duane had illegally put up a fence around his land to hinder any passages. Because this causes all the neighbours to ride a detour of 42 miles, he has been told by a state's order to put in a gate and to allow people and herds pass. Duane refuses, now Decker, the neighbour, calls the deputies for help.
After this Duane's son, Mike, is disappointed of his father who had told him not to back up against others. He confronts his father and hurts him by showing his disrespect.
Duane is well known for handling his guns. He leaves his home to confront Decker. Decker refuses a shootout, drops his gun and tells him to leave. Duane shots the unarmed man and puts the revolver in the dead man's hand.
All this is watched by the Chinese cook, Chen, who soon finds himself on his way to witness in court. Mike approaches Lonely Logan without being aware he's a killer. Logan is playing cards in the saloon and says: "You didn't come here to watch me cheating myself, so what's up?" Mike hands him over the letter from his father. Logan reads the letter and promises to bust his father out. And he does.

First Logan looks for a place to shoot from.
When Chen arrives at the courthouse, the sniper waits for him at the roof of the saloon.

The witness is shot and Lonely Logan quickly leaves town.




One of Duane's men rides out to meet him, watched by the deputy. He follows him. Logan is cautious but not enough. When he receives the money, he is shot. The deputy comes in and nearly is shot, too. He survives by shooting Duane's man.
Without the witness Duane is released and buys drinks for the people in the saloon who reluctantly accept.
When he pours one for his son, he notices that his son has realized that his father engaged a killer. In front of all Mike pours the drink into his father's face and shouts that he never wants to be like him. He is called "Shorty" by his own men and the sheriff wants him to leave the area. Duane forces the sheriff to draw his gun. In rage he misses the sheriff and is killed himself.
