YouTube now supports 720p (high-definition) videos. This guide will show you the exact settings to use when exporting videos using iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or just about any other video editing software on Mac. This guide also applies to Windows.

Settings used:

File format: MP4
Video Format: H.264
Data Rate: 2000 kbits/sec
Optimized for: Download
Image Size: 1280x720 HD
Preserve aspect ratio using: Letterbox
Frame Rate: Current
Key Frame: Every 24 frames

QuickTime 7 can be downloaded at http://apple.com/quicktime

Thanks for DerekForPresident for his video on the settings needed to upload HD videos to YouTube.

  • My output file seems to show loss in quality after the export to mp4. I can export to .mov with apple intermediate codec and it comes out as a .mov file. The quality is superb, but if I export that .mov to mp4 with those settings, quality still downgrades. Any idea?

  • YouTube can accept files in the .mov file format. You may even be using the MP4 codec with the MOV file extension without knowing it. Your best bet is to try it, and see what works. Let me know if you have any luck!

  • my vid doesn't display anything is this a good sign for the uploading process. I used your EXACT specifications, literally. I made sure my uploading was EXACTLY like yours

  • Yes, it generally is.

Looks like you got it working-did you find out the problem?

  • did your video say high quality at first?

  • No, my videos go straight to HD.
