"Alone But Not" "We have played this lovely tune many times, but not in this fashion. Rufus started vamping on this "feel," and the tune just took its own direction. Much of the music in our performances happens this way."
http://www.marvinstamm.com presents "Alone Together," featuring Marvin Stamm, trumpet; Bill Mays, piano; Rufus Reid, bass; and Ed Soph, drums.
These video clips are from the new Marvin Stamm Quartet DVD and CD set, "Alone Together." The concert from which this DVD and CD were filmed and recorded took place in California on November 5, 2006, following a week of performing concerts on the Jazz Cruise. One can talk and write about music, but in reality, it is all in the listening - and in this case, the seeing. As expressed by reviewer Dave Miele in JazzImprov magazine Jazz is a live music. "It's meant to be heard and seen in person."
Marvin Stamm: "I have much love and respect for these marvelous friends - Bill Mays, Rufus Reid, and Ed Soph - and for the music we create together. After my many years as a professional musician and these last seventeen years concentrating only upon performing as a Jazz artist, it is most rewarding to be at this place in this time in my life. It is a good place to be."
Yes ... all comments reflect the talent we are hearing here. Stamm is just outstanding ... so rare to hear someone with his technique play 'for the music' ... and every note he plays means something ... there's no gratuitous horn acrobatics ... and a wonderful focus on the soun. Just wonderful by all!

I used to see Ed with his trio at the Villager in Dallas in the late sixties. The drummer i never got to be. I still see him at UNT, and he still wails.

I was at North Texas when Ed Soph was still a studint there. I watched him play almost every day for a year, and NOT ONE DAY PASSED WHERE HE FAILED TO KNOCK ME OUT! NOT ONE!

Ed Soph - professor of percussion (jazz) at North Texas. Rufus Reid - now retired from William Patterson. Two players who are at the top of the pile while still being great university teachers. Bill Mays - goes to the gig, practices classical piano at a very high level and it shows. Marvin is the true king of jazz trumpet.

Great Tune, excellent players. These guys are heavies. Don't know these players as well but love them already! Piano player takes it out, trumpet brings it home! Awesome.
